Moon & tide orb - medium
Rowley is well known for his spherical pieces and this is one of his latest. It combines two of his passions - round ceramic forms and wood firing.
This piece was wheel thrown by Rowley in his studio at Quixotica. Following this process, it was turned and then bisque fired. Next, it was wood fired in one of the anagama kilns at Quixotica. When this piece entered the kiln, it was a plain white porcelain orb. It was placed in the fire box, at the front of the kiln, in order to allow the flames and timber create distinctive marks on the piece throughout the firing.
The surface variations you see in this piece are caused by the high temperature of the kiln and its swirling flames, along with the ash that fell on it as the timber burned over several days and nights of the firing. When the firing is at its peak, the temperatures in the kiln near those of volanic lava. The kiln is then allowed to cool over almost a week, before it is unloaded.
This is one of the resulting pieces of work, a union of man made talent and the natural work of the flame. It is a striking piece, with strong contrasting tones and a beautiful matt like finish. The shell marks are created when the piece rests on sea shells throughout the firing.
Dimensions: 21 cm diameter x 21 cm high
