Blue orb - medium
Spherical forms have been a hallmark of Rowley’s practice for over 30 years. In recent times, a series of distinctive blue orbs have become prominent in his work. To Rowley, they reference larger natural phenomena at an energetic level such as reefs, oceans and midnight skies.
The orbs are made by joining a number of large, wheel thrown pieces to make a globe-like ceramic shape. An opening is then shaped on the top of the piece and a foot ring is ‘turned’ on the bottom, providing stability.
After a bisque firing, a detailed glaze making and application process follows, created by Rowley after many years of trial and error, to achieve flowing, intricate surface colours. The glazed piece is then carefully placed on sea shells for the final firing, leaving indelible marks on each of the resulting creations.
This piece is a good example of Rowley's work, with a soft, subtle glaze effect. A beautiful display piece in any home.
Dimensions: 30 cm diameter x 32 cm high
