BEYOND THE ROUND WORKSHOP

ALTERING WHEEL THROWN FORMS

Weekend workshop - 10 am to 4 pm each day

Rowley is planning to focus on making his own work in 2023, so for now we are not taking any new additions to the waitlists for his workshops. Follow Quixotica's social media to be advised when workshops are again open for bookings.

This workshop expands traditional wheel throwing techniques and shows you how to develop new shapes through the altering and manipulation of thrown forms. Whether functional or sculptural, altering your wheel thrown work adds a different dimension to your ceramic repertoire.

Starting with a “bottomless cylinder” thrown on the wheel, you will then investigate countless options to reshape your work for unique outcomes. This expands your making repertoire beyond more traditional round thrown forms, creating new shapes such as ovals, rounded squares and a multitude of other options. Other techniques such as paddling, faceting and soft clay manipulation of bowls, vases and cups will also be covered.

For this workshop, students should have some prior experience in wheel throwing. Workshop numbers are kept small (4 to 6 students) with access to your own wheel for individual practise and tutoring, so be quick to secure your spot.

Cost - $295 per person. Materials included. Tea and coffee is provided. BYO lunch each day.

FEEDBACK from students at Rowley's wheel throwing workshops

I enjoyed Rowley’s humour and sense that anything is possible and that giving it a go is what is needed during the workshop and beyond as a potter. It was immensely inspirational and has given me so many more ideas of where I can take my work. We were given so much information about the simple but profound, like the rim and base is where the eye goes -everything in between will fall into place, to draw and map out your work before you begin, slab bases, using simple tools, having fun, the importance of wedging and how this is where you know and meet the clay first. Quixotica is just magical - from the driveway, to the studio, toilets and gallery. The closeness of nature was very grounding and creative for me. Rowley has such a wealth of knowledge - he could write a book and do online courses too, I hope the longer workshop format he was thinking of comes about next year, I'll certainly be coming to that.

Completely new techniques and insights into how Rowley produces some his gorgeous pots. Rowley’s workshops are always energising experiences and top up the fire to do some throwing. Will be using some of the techniques in my own work. I gained a little more confidence by the end of the two days. Loved the technique about throwing pots without bottoms! And very helpful tip about how to make a slab by throwing a ball of clay. Fun and effective. Good company - I enjoyed meeting the other potters too.

I always enjoy Quixotica & the people as well as the learning. It has given me some techniques that I hope will make my pots more interesting. I was particularly interested in the method of throwing the bottomless cylinders & how they can be segmented & manipulated to use, similarly to rolled slabs. Also liked the throw-down slab making technique for bases, which I will need to work on. Both these methods seem so time saving & much more lively & interesting than rolled slabs. All of the content will be useful to me. It had a great atmosphere& everything works well. Lunch at the gallery is always a pleasure.

Thank you both so much for a wonderful weekend at the Tableware workshop at your beautiful Quixotica Art Space.  Rowley’s in depth knowledge and passion for ceramics is simply outstanding and delivers the course information in a super interesting and most important fun manner.  You both made us all feel so welcome and I really appreciate the generosity of knowledge shared and stories told.  I had such a relaxing time and can’t wait to come back and partake in another course.

Thanks to you both for hosting a wonderful workshop this weekend. We had so much fun. I see teapots on the Christmas present list this year if I’m going to make a run of 6 to consolidate my learning!

The small class size meant we all received tailored advice to help us learn, which means I am now more confident about centring and lots of other valuable tips to improve my potting. I came home re-energised and excited about my potting. Seeing an expert demonstrate how to throw and the gorgeous gallery too are all inspirational. I enjoyed your good selves, your kindness and friendliness over the weekend too!

I enjoyed watching Rowley throw large objects on the wheel as he generously shared his techniques which have been acquired over many years of doing wheel work. I did find the workshop inspiring. I'm a timid thrower and I gained more confidence to take more risks while throwing and have more faith in my ability to throw large objects. It was very special having lunch on the gallery verandah too.

I particularly enjoyed that there were only 6 in our group....  I am only just a beginner potter. It certainly beats any other classes I have done with an excellent tutor, and with a small group.

I have done a few wheel throwing workshops... and Rowley’s workshop is the FIRST one I have felt catered to my needs as an advanced/intermediate beginner. The goals were achievable while still being challenging. The course content pushed me out of my little world. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt it was very worth my while. Rowley is approachable, accepting of the full range of questions presented to him, and able to explain things in a way that is understandable. His willingness to speak of the challenges he has as a thrower and the mistakes that he has made makes him very relatable. I also enjoyed having access to our own wheel... And the fact that there was a cap on the number of participants was vital to the success of the workshop.
